After playing a few selections, the tone arm
sets down, but no sound comes from of the amplifier - AMI I and others |
Hierfür kommen mehrere Ursachen in Frage.
Löschspulen in sehr regelmäßigen Abständen betätigt.
Kontakte müssen in gedrücktem Zustand 3 Kontaktzungen verbunden
Greiferarm mittig darauf trifft.
an.

After switching on the speaker (here: AMI I) and
playing approx. 6 - 8 singles, the tonearm touches down, but no sound
comes out of the amplifier. The mute relay remains energized and the
tonearm limit switch has no function. What could be the cause?
There are several possible causes.
1. Selector pin is not reset
In this case, the gripper motor remains switched on and the amplifier is
not enabled. The DC voltage is probably too low, otherwise the gripper
motor would get stuck and have to be turned manually.
The cause of the fault is either the contacts under the tone arm or the
contacts on the magazine (under the pin wheel). The contacts on the
magazine are actually unnecessary and can be removed or at least
short-circuited. The contacts under the tone arm should be cleaned and
adjusted.
2. Reset lever does not move to starting
position
If the reset lever does not return to its starting position and the
gripper motor gets stuck even though the pin has been reset, there may
be several reasons for this. It could be
- that the search lever is stiff and not
moves smooth and does not actuate the microswitch
-
that there is a defective microswitch.
The switches are easy to check. If one of the switches (or the
search lever) is actuated while the jukebox is in standby, the
associated side selector coil picks up and the gripper motor starts
to place a record. The search lever is then released. The gripper
motor must now immediately return to the starting position. If there
is a delay or the motor continues to run until it stalls, this
switch must be replaced. The gripper motor does not need to be removed if it has seized up.
There is a small cover on the top. If this is unscrewed, the
armature can be turned back half a turn with a finger or, if
necessary, carefully with a screwdriver. This is enough to let it
run. Of course, you must first ensure that both search microswitches
are pressed. The contacts referred to are normally located on the rear plate of
the magazine, where the search microswitches are also mounted. They
are actuated by the reset levers. On most devices (not all) they are
short-circuited or removed altogether. On most J models, for example,
they were no longer present from the factory.
-
that both cancel coils stay energized.
If the selection coils remain tightened after resetting the selector
pins, they should be checked for function: To do this, press all the pins on the pin wheel in by hand. Then
press and hold the scan button to rotate the magazine. The magazine
must now rotate, stopping briefly at each record and pushing
back the selection pins for the A and B sides. The selector coils for the sides and the cancel coils are actuated
at very regular intervals. The gripper motor must only move very
little. The resulting noise must stay completely the same during the
entire magazine rotation. Any irregularity indicates that something is wrong. In most cases,
this is a mechanical fault, such as sluggish searcher levers or
sticky plungers in the cancel coils. Faultless test: Then the cancel circuit is not activated
correctly when the tonearm is placed on the record. The fault is almost certainly due to the contacts below the tonearm
(camshaft switches), which are activated when the tonearm is placed
on the record, or to the contacts at the rear right (transfer
switches), which are activated by the side switch coils. Faulty test: The first thing to do is cleaning and adjusting
some contacts. These are the camshaft switches behind the tonearm
and the transfer switches at the rear right, which are actuated by
the side selector coils. Please do not use a common contact
burnisher for cleaning. It is better to use a strip of plastic about
1 cm wide, to which a strip of the finest possible wet sandpaper (grain
size at least 800 or 1000) is glued on both sides. Alternatively,
you can also fold a strip of wet sandpaper lengthwise so that the
sanding surfaces are on the outside. Slide this strip between the
contacts and polish the contact surfaces until they are completely
bright. The camshaft switches are actuated when not in use and are therefore
difficult to access. To reach them, press the search microswitch and
raise the gripper, then switch off the service switch.
If all contacts are clean and bright, check whether the contacts are
correctly adjusted. The best way to do this is to run the gripper
motor back to just before the switching point and switch the service
switch off again. Then continue turning the gripper motor by hand (through
the opening at the top) until the contacts are actuated. The
normally open contacts must be securely closed before the normally
closed contact opens. One of the contacts must have 3 contact blades
connected when pressed.
-
That the reset levers move too slowly to the starting position
and become jammed between the pin and the search lever.
To remedy the fault, it is necessary to remove the pin wheel. The
first step is to remove the large arm with the pin pushers. To do
this, loosen the allen screw. The arm can then be removed. A small
steel plate is screwed onto the pin wheel with two screws. This
plate must be loosened and moved so that it no longer engages in the
groove of the metal part (selector coil in the magazine axle). The
pin wheel is clamped onto the magazine axle with a hexagon head
screw (SW 11). After loosening, the pin wheel must be removed.
Now unscrew the retaining brackets (on which the unnecessary
contacts are also mounted) that hold the reset levers in place and
remove the circlip from the shaft of the reset lever. Make sure that
the spring does not jump away and gets lost. The lever can then be
pulled out sideways. There is a pin on the inside of the lever which
goes through the coil plunger. This must also be removed. Be careful,
there is another spring. Clean and degrease the coil plunger and the
sleeve in the coil. If there are any rough spots, they should also
be polished. It is important that the parts are and remain
absolutely grease-free. The large springs are usually a little lame.
You can stretch them a little to increase the tension. Once both
plungers have been cleaned, the whole thing is reassembled. You can
put a drop of oil on each of the shafts of the search lever and the
reset lever.
The pin wheel must be adjusted during installation so that the
magazine does not have too much play in the axial direction. It must
be turned so that the support bracket for the hook is exactly in the
position where the hook arm meets it in the middle. Then the
pinpusher coil is fixed again with the small plate. The plunger of the pinpusher and the inside of the brass tube must
also be cleaned and polished if necessary. When fitting the
pinpusher, make sure that the metal sleeve slides into the slotted
brass tube so that the brass tube is clamped between the metal
sleeve and the aluminum part. Insertion is easier if the aluminum
part is pushed apart slightly with a screwdriver near the allen
screw. Once the part is correctly positioned, it can be pushed onto
the coil plunger with a firm push. To adjust, use the selection
wheel to set number A1. Then press the lever of the stop coil in the
selector and fix it with a screwdriver so that the selector can no
longer turn. Now turn the pinpusher lever so that the longer
pinpusher points exactly in the middle of the pin labeled A1. The
short pinpusher points exactly to an empty hole. The distance to the
pins should be about 2 - 3mm. Finally, tighten the allen screw (not
too tight).

|
Loud noise from the loudspeaker when a
selection is made while a record plays. |
Hierfür kommen mehrere Ursachen in Frage:
-
Masseproblem am
Potentiometer
-
Der Verstärker benötigt
eine Überholung
-
Hochfrequente

If another title is selected
while a record is being played, a loud noise comes from the loudspeaker
when the selcected pin is acivated. What could be the cause?
There are several possible
causes:
-
Ground problem on
potentiometer
-
The amplifier needs an
overhaul
-
High-frequency interference
from the selector unit get catched by the volume control.
Unfortunately, this cannot always be completely eliminated. However,
there are some actions that can at least greatly reduce it:
-
You can remove the
volume control (including the housing) and mount it as far away
from the speaker as possible.
-
You can try to build a
separately earthed shielding housing over it, which is not
connected to the controller housing.
-
A 10K resistor can be
mounted in the line to g1 (pin 7 of the first 12AU7). Together
with the grid capacitance, this forms an HF filter. If necessary,
you can also connect a small capacitor (max. 100pF) from pin 7
to ground.
-
If there is only a
crackling noise when the pin gets activated, but not while the pulse
generator on the keyboard is running (or the stepper coils are
activated), there could be another cause. The contact on the sprague
relay (the relay with the long lever at the top right of the pulse
converter, which switches the selection pin coil) could be dirty,
causing a strong spark. I have had also a selection pin activating
coil with a short circuit, which also led to a strong spark on the
contact.

CD100 |
|
The first song starts very loud, after a few
seconds the volume returns to the set level - Rowe CD100 |
In diesem Fall sollte
der Verstärker (von einem Fachmann) repariert werden. |

When I make a selection after a
long time, the first song starts very loudly. After a few seconds, it
returns to the previous setting.
What could be the cause?
There are several possibilities
for the error described. First of all, for your understanding: The music
titles are recorded at different volumes and the volume would have to be
adjusted again and again.
For this reason, almost all jukebox amplifiers have a so-called AVC
(Automatic Volume Control). This has the effect that the amplification
is reduced for loud music titles and increased for quiet ones. If there
is no music signal present (because the speaker is at a standby or
because another CD is being played), the AVC “thinks” that the music is
very quiet and increases the volume. When a CD starts to play, the
volume is much too high at first. It then takes a moment for the AVC to
reduce the volume.
There is therefore another circuit (called “squelch”) to prevent this.
The amplifier is muted (“muting”) at standby and while the CD is being
changed. During this time, the squelch circuit is also active and
“simulates” an audio signal to the AVC, causing it to regulate the
amplification back to a normal level.
A defect in this squelch circuit can have various causes. It is possible
that the amplifier is not muted at all because, for example, the muting
plug on the amplifier is not connected. It is also possible that the
muting signal from the control computer is missing.
However, it is also possible that the fault is in the amplifier. In this
case, the amplifier should be repaired (by a specialist). |

|
The record indicator of AMI H is mis-adjusted.
The right song gets played but doesn't corresond with the indicator
window. |
In
|
The two gear wheels must be
turned against each other. The three screws of the large gear wheel must
be loosened to detach it from the the small gear wheel, and to turn the
popularity meter to the correct position.
To be on the safe side, the service switch should be switched off.
Otherwise the magazine may suddenly start to run.
The scan switch is mounted on the popularity meter which activates the
scan.
The small gear wheel is connected to the motor by a piece of hose with
two hose clamps. If one of these hose clamps is loose, the adjustment is
of little use only, because it will soon mis-adjust itself again within
a short time. In this case, you can turn the popularity meter by hand
without loosening the large gear wheel.
Note:
It is possible that oil or grease has got on the hose and is destroying
the rubber. If so, even new hose clamps will work only for a short
period. In this case it is better to use a piece of reinforced hose with
a suitable inner diameter. |

Der Plattenteller einer
Continental dreht nicht nach erfolgreicher Wahl. |
|
The turntable of a Continental doesn't turm
after successful selection. |
Soweit funktioniert
alles.
|
Everything works as far as it goes. After the
selection, the corresponding record is taken out and placed on the
turntable. But the turntable does not turn. What could be the cause?
If the turntable does not turn, it may be a
mechanical or an electrical cause. It could be that the motor is not
running. In this case the fault might be the camshaft switch #3. The
camshaft switches are the 6 micro-switches located under the rocker
between the turntable and the tonearm. Switch #3 switches the turntable
motor.
You can see whether the motor is running or not when taking off the
turntable - it is only stuck in a bushing. Between the motor and the
turntable there should be a rubber wheel (the so-called idler wheel). It
is mounted on a lever and should be pulled into the right position with
a spring. The idler wheel needs to run on the inside of the turntable.
When putting the turntable back in place (or even after transporting the
jukebox) make sure that the rubber wheel is guided under the turntable.
The turntable must not rest on the rubber wheel. |

Nach dem Abspielen einer
B-Seite wird keine gewählte A-Seite gespielt
AMI I und andere |
|
After a B-side was played it does
not return to any selected A-side
AMI I et al. |
|
The cause of the error is that the Toggle
Shifter Coil #1 is not operated when an A-side is selected. If an A-side
was also played before, it does not matter. But if a B-side was played
in before, the Transfer Switch is in the wrong position and the B-side
pin is reset instead of the A-side pin. Therefore, the Stopping Switch
#1 remains pressed, the placement of the record can not be completed.
The transfer motor remains energized but is blocked and the amplifier
remains muted and the record cannot be put back.
In most cases, the error is caused by dirty or poorly adjusted camshaft
switches. In rare cases, however, it may be due to stopping switch #1.
The
service manual offers in addition to the schematics all settings
described here. It offers also a description of the work flow with circuit
diagram and position sketch for each work step.
