The cockchafer (Melolontha), also called May bug, is a European beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae.
They only spend part of their lives as such – mostly in May, hence their name. Before that they spend about four years living as larvae in the ground, feeding off roots. After that they pupate and evolve into bugs, thus the bugs appear periodically.

Their typical “leaves” on their antenna are their nose, with which they can smell very well. In this way, the males having up to 50,000 olfactory cells, find the female to mate with.
Environmental influences by men, usage of pesticides, in praticuliar the insecticide DDT, did let their population decrease rapidly. Luckily until today the population is about stable again.

Real cockchafer grow up to 2.5 - 3 cm only. Means, our plush may bug is much larger and - of course - more fluffy. But it also shows the typical white and black zigzag pattern on both sides.
