The redknee tarantula has its name from the typical red coloring of the joints of its legs. Regardless of its size of 4 - 8 cm it can easily hide in the undergrowth of the dry forests and savannas it inhabits in Mexico. It lives solitary in long and deep burrows, only leaving them during the night to feed. During daytime it escapes from the heat in their cool and wet underground nest. To protect itself the redknee tarantula kicks urticating hairs from the abdomen and the back legs, rather than bite.

Bird-spider tarantulas, which the redknee tarantula belongs to, do have exceptional tactile and vibration sense. They also have a very developed sense of hearing and are able to spy every moving creature around them. They do have eight small eyes which are located in groups of four in the carapace fovea. But those recognize contrasts in a low quality only.
Bird-spider tarantulas not only show a hairy body but hairy legs too – in contrast to other spiders. Female redknee tarantulas can live up to 30, but males only about 5 years.

Our Mexican Redknee Tarantula "Aggi" is hairy as well and very cosy, too. Of course it does neither kicks urticating hairs or  bites, but loves to climb the arm of its owner.
