Roes (Capreolus capreolus L.), the most common and smallest of the deers, can be found almost everywhere in Europe and Eurasia. They live in woods with understorey and glades as well as mountain regions up to the timber line.
Roes belong those animals which do ahve an excellent sense of smell. More that 320 million olfactory cells allow them to realize even very light smells and also to smell humans from a distance of even 300 - 400 m.
The eyes are located sideways, hence deers can look around in a large circle without turning their heads. Mainly they react rather more on movements than on still standing situations. They hearing is well too.
Roedeers, female deers, usually deliver one or two fawns after a period of 40 weeks in May and June. It is remarkable that roedeers can vary the date of delivery up to 14 days. It is thought that this depends on the food situation in spring.

The white spots on the brown fur are typical and are a kind of camouflage until fall. After that these spots disappear.

Of course our fawn shows these spots as well.
The last photo shows our fawn next to a roedeer (Kö-F3510) and the roebuck (Kö-F3520).
