Racoons (Procyon lotor) are an American species belonging to the family of Procyonidae. Nowadays they have spread across a wide range of Europe, caucasu, and Japan too. In last century racoons were brought here and kept on special farms for their fur which was very popular. But being clever and adaptive they could escape quite often and have spread successfully in the wild. They are already almost considered as domestic.
Racoons prefer forests, but can be found close to human settlements. Thus sometimes even attics are not safe from being used as winter quarters. They are nocturnal animals and hardly to see during the day. But nevertheless everybody recognizes them immediately: Their black 'mask' around the eyes and the ringed tail are typical characteristics.
Did you know that racoons do have a great memory? In tests it could be prooved that they are able to solve a problem even after three year. Amazing, isn't it?

The name "Racoon" is derived from the Red Indian term ahrah-koon-em = "who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands" or from the Aztec mapachitli which means "who takes everything in its hands". The German term "Waschbär" is derived from the fact, that these little bears wash their food while holding it in their hands when kept in captivity.

Our plush racoon is nocturnal or diurnal - just as it's new owner prefers it. Certainly it does have this great memory and surely will keep each secret safe.
