The golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a subspecies of the hamster, whose fur is golden, hence the name. It typically has a dark stripe below the ears and a white underside.

Like all hamsters they are mavericks. They are nocturnals and sleep during daytime. They feed of almost everything they find - cereal and plants, insects and fruits. If there is more food than they are able to eat, they stuff it into their cheek pouches and bring it into their burrows.

Hamsters are popular pets, especially for kids or working people. They don't need much time. Of course they like to get out of their cages and be played with. Golden hamsters are very curious, but being docile and smaller than their relatives they are one of the most popular hamster species.

Our golden hamster is as cute as its living conspecific, and just as big: Living hamsters reach a length of 13 to 18 cm (about 5" to 7'').
