The Orang-Utan (Pongo) belongs to the family of great apes and are domesticated on the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. One differs between the Sumatra- and Borneo-Orang-Utan. Both species belong to the group of endangered animals.
The redbrown fur, the eyes with their smart appearance and the asthenic which is perfectly adapted for their life in the tall trees of the frain forests are typical characteristics.

Today Orang-Utans live mostly by themselves which is caused by the decreasing food in rain forests. But they show a great social behaviour and like being in groups - if it's allowed by the food situation. Unfortunately this became worse during the last years, and also due to increasing deforestation, the natural habitat gets more and more less. The changing in climate influenced the period of growth of the rain forests, hence no longer food in abundance can grow. This would be necessary to pay for the reproductive cycle of female Orang-Utans.
A female Orang-Utan delivers a baby with an average of every 8 years. This gets suckled for 5 years, and during this time no other baby gets born. The next earliest pregnancy could be with the following abundance of fruits.

The name "Orang-Utan" means as much as "man of the forest" and is derived from the Malay words "Orang" (human) und "Utan" (Forest). Regarding Alfred Brehm's book "The Animals of the World. Brehm's Life of Animal" the Javanese say that these apes are able to speak if they would; but they don't to it being afraid that they would have to work.

Satu, our Orang-Uutan, also does not like to work. He loves it cosy and much appreciates companionship by others. Take a deep look into his eyes and listen well what he's telling. Maybe he tells about his home, about the forests when climbing in the trees, and about the other animals living there. Or  ...
