Lemurs (Lemuriformes) are a species of strepsirrhine primates that are endemic to Madagascar. They developed due to the long evolutionary seperation in 60 different subspecies. Today many of them are endangered by increased land clearance by fires and additional hunting.
The name derives from the Latin words "lemures" and "forma" which means as much as "spirits" and "form".

The black & white ruffed lemurs are called varis. There are red varis as well. They grow to a size of ca. 43 - 57 cm with a tail that makes a length of up to 65 cm. Characteristics are the doglike muzzle, the hair at the ears, the hairy collar and the long tail. They live mainly in the rain forest of the Eastern part of Madagascar typically hanging headlong in the trees. They feed mostly on fruits, flowers, nectar and leaves. They live in family kind of small groups with mostly 2 - 5, but sometimes up to 16 animals. Black-white ruffed varis belong to the endagered species. A Decreasing environment and hunting are most causes therefore.

Our black-white ruffed vari is unique for sure but luckily does not belong to the endagered species. It surely will fit perfectly into your family and be a great friend. And don't worry if you should find it sitting in the lotus position one day: Its living relatives too like to get the first warming beams of sunlight in this position.
