The viscacha (lagidium and logostomus) is a two genera rodent and belongs to the family of chinchillas (Chinchillidae) which inhabits South America. Altogether there are five species of viscachas. The plain viscacha (logostomus maximus) lives in the grasslands, the other four in the Andes. From those the species Lagidium ahuacaense was not discovered until 2005 and only a few dozen individuals are known so far. It is guessed that it is an endangered species.
The viscacha looks similar to a rabbit but with long hind legs and a very long bushy tail.
Its fur is very soft and often grey on the back and brown on the front. Viscachas live in colonies in and among rocks and around crags and in steeper cliffs. They are very social animals, take care of each other and protect their family against being preyed or strangers.

Our viscacha "ChiChi" does not belong to the endangered species. If you own it you do not want to leave it anymore. You can play with the soft toy viscacha and join it on a imaginary journey to the Andes, discover a labyrinth of caves or simply listen to the stories of people in South America.
