Armadillo

Product 62 of 62

Armadillos (Dasypoda) are the only surviving families in the order Cingulata. There are 20 species of them living mainly in South America and in South-Eastern parts of North America. Their lineage reaches back 60 million years, into the time of dinosaurs. There also has been an armadillo that was as big as a small car, reaching up to 1400 kg (3000 lb) weight and 3 m (10 ft) length. They have characteristic rings of armour around their bellies and bone plates on shoulder and bottom. Hence their name, it is the diminutive of armado, the Spanish word for armored. If they are in danger, they roll up and thus protect themselves from natural enemies.

Altogether not much is really known yet about armadillos. Most of them feed on insects, are nocturnal and solitary. Even though they look very round and have a heavy shield, they are fast runners and also good at swimming. For this they have two very funny ways of crossing a river. Either they swallow a lot of air so that they have enough uplift to swim the river. Or they hold their breath, let themeselves sink to the bottom of the river and run to the other side of the river.

Our armadillo is, regarding food, not much picky. It "feeds" actually most what could be possible in a play full of joy and imagination. It likes to share with its playmate and loves to test something new, not known yet.
