The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) belongs to the family of rodents and moreover it's the largest one worldwide. It can be found in the wet areas of South America. Its body and the semi-aquatic way of living are similar to a hippopotamus, but the capybara is closely related to ginuia pigs.
The name "Capybara" means 'lord of the grass' in the tongue of the Guarani Indians of South Africa. Probably this is due to its fondness for grass, which it mostly eats under or close to water.
Capybaras live close to water. They do have webbing between their toes, making them excellent swimmers and divers. If they not take a sand bath in the warm sun, they can be seen in the water - either feeding or resting.
Capybaras live in flocks of variable sizes, between three and thirty animals have been seen together. But there always is only one male that lives together with many females and their offspring, protecting them from harm.

Our capybara thus is particularly happy when it is together with the capybara cub (Kö-F6540), as seen on the last picture. Even so, it feels completely contented in a human family and enjoys long sunbaths or joyful plays.

This capybara joined our family about 2 weeks ago and found it's way to a very happy new caretaker. The little marvel is as adorable and lifelike as in the pictures and was received in perfect condition thanks to the impeccable packaging. Thank you for taking good care of our new resident/rodent before sending it on it's way over.
