Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) are the most spread ones among penguin species. Next to the emperor penguin they come along the Antarctic which includes the subarctic regions (e.g. southern part of South America) and surrounding islands. They can be found foremost in the coastlines. Adélie penguins were named after Adélie, the wife of French polar explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville, in 1840.

Characteristics for Adélie penguins are the plumage in black and white only, the black head, the small looking half with feather covered beak, the white eye ring, and the light to dark rose coloured feet. Because of this Adélie penguins can hardly be taken for any other specy.

Adélie penguins are able for astonishing efforts. They can dive to a depth of 170 m, foraging 30 hours in a distance up to 100 km, and leave the colony outside of mating season up to 1200 km (~ 745 miles). But for mating season they return preferably to the same place to the same partner. To protect the eggs against soil moisture they build a nest from little rocks they collect (sometimes even from a nest nearby).
After two eggs were laid the female penguin leaves for foraging while the male penguin stays for breeding. This takes 35 days. First the baby penguins are grey after hatching but turn into a brown colour then. To protect themselves the cubs gather together in a kind of "kindergarden". Adélie penguins grow most fast of all penguins. They are grown-ups after 9 weeks already and feed themselves.

Our Adélie penguin chick also loves to gather in groups with other cubs. But it will also love to find a new home in an aven warmer region than Antarctic and close friendship with other (plush)animals step by step.

The last photo shows for illustration the Adélie chick next to an adult Adélie Penguin.
