The Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) is the largest recent owl. It lives in South-West-Europe and North-Afrika, on the European continent eatsbound to Sibiria, in the Near East, South-India and South-China. Remarkable are the head with ear-tufts.
Eagle Owls need a richly structured landscape. They breed in rocky areas with cliffs and steep rock slopes.

In 2005 the Eagle Owl was voted as the "Bird of the Year" by the NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, founded in Germany in 1899) and LBV (Association for Bird Conservation). Thanks to various helping programs the Eagle Owl can even be found in lowlands, the population could be stabilized and even did increase. But still the Eagle Owl belongs the the endangered species.

The breed takes 34 days, only the female takes care of it. Young Eagle Owls leave the nest after a few weeks and stay on a limk. They get fed there by their parents. They are able to fly after 10 weeks but are not independant before five months.

The second photo shows the large Eagle Owl (Kö-F2785) besides the this small one and the owlet (Kö-F2805).
