Robin

Product 88 of 106

The Robin (Erithacus rubecula) or European Robin, to be precise, belongs to the family of chats. It is a real early bird and already with dawn it's song can be heard. Compared to other birds European Robins even sing in wintertime.
It is located in Europe, North-Africa and Asia Minor.

Robins show a red breast and brown feathers and are easy to recognize. Though robins do not belong to the endangered species they were voted to the "Bird of the Year" in 1992. It was intended to indicate negativ environmental influences which harm these little birds: Exhaust, hole in the ozone layer, acid rain and decreasing forests and woods. Robins prefer to live in garden, parks and borders of wood close to water. Robins take a bath every day, eben in wintertime!

In UK in the 1960s the Robin was adopted as the unofficial national bird.
Another particuliar meaning is written to the European Robin: It was quite important for the exploration and scientific approval of the avian magnetic compass used by animal. This sense was verified in the 1960s only and international approval was given in 1972.
We think this is another reason to give a home to this chiefly little bird, both in the garden and as a toy in the kids or living room.
