The most noticeable sign of the Toucan (Ramphastidae) is the large colourful bill. One might consider it being a parrot, but indeed it belongs to the order of woodpeckers. Like those their flight is for short distances only and in waves because the short rounded wings are not suitable for flying. Hence the toucan with its strong legs moves rather by jumping through the tree tops in Central- and Southamerica where it lives. It inhabits natural or already created tree hollows. The bill with its forward-facing serrations is very light, being composed of bone struts filled with spongy tissue of keratin between them. For a long time it was thought that the bill was important in mating season or to open fruits. But recent studies show that the bill is a highly efficient system for thermoregulation.
Toucans are monogamous and feed their offspring together. They are sociable animals and love to play. With their large bill they fight with each other. They are great in throwing fruits: They pick a fruit and put their head in the neck. The fruit gets tossed up, catched again and roled through the long bill.

Our toucan "Malibu" is one of the toco toucans. It is very playful and true. When playing together it loves to hide in caves, hollows, and other branches. Or it jumps around with its friends making noise and searching for adventures. Just as for the imagination of children, the sky is the limit.
