The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) belongs to the dormice family and is related to the dormouse. Its mask around the eyes, which reminds of Zorro, makes it unmistakable. From October to April, the garden dormouse is in hibernation and, although the name suggests otherwise, it lives mainly in the forest. There it builds spherical nests in tree holes, in open bushes or in nesting boxes. But one can find it, if seen at all, in orchards and home gardens, too. It is nocturnal and omnivorous.

The garden dormouse is on the red list of endangered mammals. Germany has even classified it as a national responsibility species within the "National Strategy on Biological Diversity of the Federal Government".

In its new home, "Elli" is certainly not as rare as in nature; although, a nice game of hide and seek in mountains of pillows is not only fun for it!
