Orcas belong to the family of dolphins, but are easily distinguished by their typical black and white colouring. They can become up to 10 m (30') long and as heavy as nine tons.

They mostly feed on fish, but depending on their habitat they eat other sea mammals too, such as seals or sealions. Orcas hunt in groups and develop clever strategies which they even teach their calves. They can catch birds, sometimes even luring them with baits. Furthermore there have been sightings of orcas pushing a seal from an ice floe by swimming underneath it, causing it to shake and eventually flip over.

Orcas live in large family groups with up to 50 individuals. Often the female orcas decide and care for the family. Social interaction is very important for orcas, they communicate with calls and whistles. All the more, they even play with each other and jump out of the water.

The offsprings are born after 13 to 16 months of gestation period, but they are already quite large. A newborn calf is normally 2 m long and can weigh up to 200 kg.

On the last picture the orca cavorts with an orca calf (Kö-F6500) in the water. Maybe it's the offspring which gets teached a new stragety.
