1. The tone arm of a Fanfare 100 (also Fanfare 60 and Fanfare 100 stereo) moves not or only very slowly towards the record stack.

The tonearm of a Fanfare 100 (also Fanfare 60 and Fanfare 100 stereo) does not move or moves only very, very slowly towards the record stack.
If the jukebox is switched off in the meantime, it "works" somewhat faster afterwards.

Answer: The cause of the described error is most likely the two rubber-covered idler wheels under the main shaft. These idler wheels are either hard or oily or porous (damaged). You need to remove the main shaft, clean the idler wheels well, degrease them and get them grippy again.

Be careful with emery: It can roughen the rubber too much and thus destroy it.

The right selection gets found, record pulled out but the turntable doesn't spin - models with drive belt
After the record is taken out of the magazine and clamped onto the turntable, the tone arm sets down. Then the operating mode switch opens, causing the motor relay and the mute relay to release.
The motor relay mr1 switches off the electrical clutch and mr2 switches the play motor from 100V to 80V, since this should only drive the turntable.

Possibly the defect is to be looked for here.

A Prestige 160 scans to the right selection, lifts it slightly but does not pull it. Also valid for other models
Look at the bearing point (shaft) of the arm that lifts the record. It is probably gummed up in its bearing point.

4. Abspielung: klickendes Geräusch, dann stehen bleiben   4. Playing: Clicking noise, then stopping

I have a Prestige 160. When starting to play a song the jukebox makes a clicking noise and stops.
It sounds like sparks jump over.

1. Possible cause
If it is an electronically controlled Prestige 160, the "reject button" (red or black button) on the volume control could be defective or blocked. The easiest way to check is to disconnect one of the wires.
The second possibility could be the brake transistor (usually BD242 on the centrale). It closes the carriage motor briefly, so that this does not simply continue to run and thus returning the record again immediately (but I have never encountered this as a fault).

2. Possible cause

The fault is possibly to be found in the operating mode switch.

Models with drive belt: The operating mode switch gets actuated mechanically. Either the adjustemt screw is mis-adjsuted or the cam is broken. This means quite some effort to repair.

Models with E, ES, ESII equipment
: Should it be an electronically controlled jukebox, a microswitch - right below the two motors - might be defective. When replacing in any case a 5A type microswitch with lever with roller must be used at least. A 10A one would even be better but is difficult to find.
In addition, a correct adjustment by means of the right hand holding screw is necessary afterwards. This defect would then also explain the crackling or pattering noise. Since this operating mode switch has not coped with the high switching current over a longer period of operation due to its design, there was a retrofit board from NSM, which solves this problem (which probably occurred quite often at that time). The switch now only has to switch the low base current of a transistor; the actual switching operation is performed by a power transistor (BD 139).

A Consul E120ST scans to the selected record, doesn't pull it out and goes back into rest position - also valid for other models.
There is a fault in the carriage.
The sequence: When a selected record is reached, the release solenoid is attracted so that the camshaft and subsequently the clutch rod are actuated. The lower gear of the clutch shaft is disengaged, the transport wheel is no longer driven and the carriage is in front of the desired position.
At the same time, the clutch worm is engaged and the reversing lever for the correct side of the record is actuated. The camshaft driven by the clutch shaft causes the record to be pulled out the magazine and being clamped.
So the fault should be located in this sequence. Resinous mechanisms are often the cause.

6. After 2 - 3 seconds  of playing in a Festival 130(D) the tension of the tone arm slacks, drops and the record playing ends.
The counterweight is usually not the problem, as long as no one has mis-adjusted it. Check if locking varnish on the scres is still OK. Do not adjust or bend the two pressure springs! The error can be
1. A defective needle (rubber suspension hardened) or
2. A hardened tone arm wire
The tone arm wire with the rubber nozzle should be carefully pulled out of the small metal fork at the bottom left, then cut the rubber nozzle open and remove it. The wire should be then carefully smoothed out with your fingers (if necessary, heat it slightly with a hair dryer and treat it with vaseline). The now large loop does not get attached to the fork any longer and should not hit the mechanism anywhere.
In most cases this method helps. Under no circumstances try to replace the tonearm wire and avoid damaging it. A replacement in the necessary softness and flexibility is hardly available.

A NSM finds the right selection, pulls out the record and returns it right away without playing it - models with drive belt
  1. Der Betriebsartenschalter ist defekt oder verstellt.
  2. Die Kupplung ist verharzt oder defekt.
  3. Der Kupplungsmagnet zieht nicht richtig an (Verharzung).
The carriage finds the record, but after the needle landed, the motor does not stop or stops only briefly, and the record is put back again immediately. This is the case with both the A and B sides.
There are several possible sources of error:
  1. The operating mode switch is defective or misadjusted.
  2. The clutch is gummed up or broken.
  3. The clutch solenoid does not attract (gummed up).
  4. The reed contact, which is normally closed when the needle runs in the cut-off groove, could be permanently closed. Then the jukebox "thinks" the song is already over. The reed contact is located below a gray plastic box below the tone arm. The reed contact is normally activated when the permanent magnet on the tone arm swings over it.

  5. The cancel button on the back panel could be permanently activated. Then the playing gets interrupted immediately.
  6. The braking resistor on the power supply is faulty or even burnt. This resistor "likes" to unsolder itself. You can find it - depending on the version of the power supply - on the top left of the PCB. Most of the time the plastic cover is already burned a bit too.
If the braking resistor is not o.k., then the carriage has too much momentum and runs so far that the operating mode switch already switches over again, so that the carriage returns the record right away.

Es kommen mehrere Fehlerquellen in Frage:

The carriage does find the selection, but after the needle touches the record the motor does not top resp. only for a very short moment only and hence the record gets returned immediately. This is as well with A and B sides.
There are several causes possible:
  1. It might be the operating mode switch. It might be defective or mis-adjusted. In some NSM jukeboxes, a small circuit board with 4 transistors has been retrofitted under the tone arm. This circuit board is there to relieve the operating mode switch. On the circuit board cold solder joints or defective transistors can be found often.
  2. Then there is the possibility that, depending on the design of the carriage, the light barrier of the cut-off switch (or actually the circuit that is located behind it on the connection board of the carriage) is not in order.
  3. A burnt braking resistor on the power supply is another possibility.
  4. The reed contact, which is normally closed when the needle runs in the cut-off groove, could be permanently closed. Then the jukebox "thinks" the song is already completed.
The reed contact is located under a gray plastic box below the tone arm. The reed contact is normally activated when the permanent magnet on the tone arm swings over it.
  5. The cancel button on the back panel could be permanently activated. Then the playing gets interrupted immediately.

9. A NSM - model with drive belt - finds the right selection and puts the record on the turntbale. Then it stops completely.

Abhilfe: reinigen
After a short while the turntable starts to spin. When moving the tone arm to the end of the record then all works as it should, finding and playing.

Answer
: There are two possibilities:
  1. The drive belt slips because of being greasy. Remedy: Cleaning.
  2. The rocker which makes the pressure sticks. Remedy: Cleaning.

The carriage starts poorly, the record gets pulled out of the magazine after several attempts only, noises during this process - models with one drive belt

Antwort:
My Prestige 120 has problems with the selection This means after selecting there is a very poor start. The motor turns briefly, then stops. After about 10 tries, the gripper arm takes out the record and makes a noise as if a pinion skips. If I push a little to the left on the right side of the carriage (where the motor pulley moves), the record gets retrieved correctly and returned again. However, when I return the record, the rattling noise is heard again - but not if I press a little to the left on the right side of the carriage (where the motor roller moves), as I did before. This problem is reproducible at any time, so it is not sporadic.

Answer: The noise probably comes from the little lever at the right end of the worm, which is supposed to be pulled along by one of the two teeth on the motor shaft when the clutch solenoid is activated. It happens that this little lever is worn through (especially if it is adjusted too tightly and the teeth have slipped over it often) and then a piece of it breaks off.
However, it is also possible that it is simply not extended far enough, or that the teeth on the motor shaft are too far apart.
The little lever must be movable so that it can move all the way to the right for scanning and changing. If the serrated drivers on the motor shaft slip past it, even though the lever is in the far right position, it could be that the entire motor has loosened a bit and the small pins are no longer "reaching" the lever as a result. In that case, you would have to tighten the motor so that the motor comes back into the correct position.
I would advise against bending any parts.

11. A NSM with ES-II-technology finds the right selection and pulls out the record. Then all stops, the records does not get played.

It could be that there is a problem with or in the clutch and camshaft. If both are gummed up so that this can move mechanically only poorly, cleaning should remedy this problem.
It also happens that the clutch breaks.
The arm that presses the play motor for the turntable against the roller could also be gummed up. Then the motor runs empty.
The problem could also be related to the operating mode switch. From the service manual (mutatis mutandis):

"This is opened, causing the motor relay to release and the amplifier's mute circuit to be off.

The motor is switched off by the contacts mo 1 and mo2 of the motor relay and gets connected to a DC voltage via the transistor T206 with both windings. This brakes it. Electrolytic capacitor C216 has been charged in the meantime, so that negative voltage is applied to T 207.

When the electrolytic capacitor C216 is discharged, this voltage drops and the voltage at base T208 also drops via R233 and C215. This opens and discharges the residual charge from C216. When C216 no longer supplies voltage, T206 and T207 are blocked. Thus after approx. 1 - 1.5 sec. the braking process is completed."

After finding a B-side the record gets pulled out and jams with the tone arm which does not move right to the other side - models with drive belt
The carriage should be removed and thoroughly cleaned of gum.
Then you can try to return to the original position by hand. This means that you turn the worm, which is normally turned by the motor, by hand until the record gripper arm is "folded" again, i.e. resting on it. You can see the shaft from the front.

Important: At first, turning is easy, then it becomes more difficult and you have to turn harder to overcome the point of switching.

13. After finishing a song the same title gets played again and again. The carriage does not scan to the next selected record.

I have troubles with my NSM Consul 120. After a record has been played, it gets returned into the magazine. But then it gets pulled out gain, played, returned, pulled out again, played, etc.
Means after finishing the record the carriage does not start to move to the next selected record but plays the same record gain and again.

Answer: This fault is probably a mechanical one.
With some luck the mechanism has only jammed because of being gummed up. In worst case, something is broken, but this can usually be repaired.

Procedure: With power being switched off, remove the carriage and remove the cables.
Note: Bear in mind which was right and left.
Then turn the carriage to see the underside. Almost in the center, you will see a metal lever that can be moved.
If this lever with the axle of this carriage is in playing position and does not move downwards, it probably got stuck.

Remedy: Push the lever all the way up and spray some Ballistol oil (or similar) on the (mostly) white axle and also on the gear hanging there. Let it work for a while.
Now reconnect the wires, but do not put the carriage back into the carraige base yet. Switch on the jukebox and press the reset button. Alternatively, you can also push the tone arm slightly forward until the cut-off position is reached.
If the gripper now moves down and stays there, the mechanism is working and nothing is broken.
A thorough overhaul of the carriage would nevertheless be recommended, since other parts are usually also gummed up.

14. After a sucessful selection the title gets played. But with all following selections the carriage scans only back and forth.
Models with drive belt.

If the jukebox is switched off for 10 seconds and then switched on again, only the very first selection gets taken again. It does not matter which selection gets made first, each is accepted and played without problems, but no other. Credit unit, carriage and control center have been overhauled already.

Answer: The ferrite core memory used by NSM does not forget any selection, even after long periods without voltage. So if the further selections never get played, they are probably not written in.
Test: Run the carriage with the scan button. If there are still some selections written in, they should be found now.
If this is not the case, the fault is located in the write-in circuit. The two 15 µF electrolytic capacitors should be replaced.
If only one of them is out of order, it could pull down the voltage after the first selection.

15. The speed sometimes slows down evenly while playing. Then the right rpm returns.
Models
E, ES, ESII, ESIII, ESIV equipment

While the record gets played the speed slows down suddenly. It is not a cranky sound but an even reduction in speed. After that the regular speed comes back again.  A regularity cannot be recognized.

Answer: The fault can be of an electrical or a mechanical type.

Electrical: Try to measure the voltage right at the moment of slow playing. Possibly there is a problem with the supply of the motor and it is necessary to find the cause for the voltage drop. Components such as capacitors and resistors in the surrounding of the motor may be responsible for this.
This also includes the small
micro switches on the carriage. They can switch improperly despite audible clicks. They should be measured for continuity. You cannot rely on the clicking of microswitches, they can still be faulty.
Theoretically, the motor could also have an electrical defect, but this is rather rare.

Mechanical: It is possible that the play motor runs stiff, especially when it is cold (when switching on the jukebox). Resin may be the cause, and cleaning can solve this. It is important that the shaft is very clean, polish if necessary. To open the motor, carefully pull off the retainer. If necessary clean/spray in advance to solve adhesions. The tension springs should be checked for being ok too.
Cleaning the motor in detail:
1. Unscrew the right hand gray cover if still there.
2. Remove the black motor. It is ok if it hangs on the wires only.
3. Remove the washer from the TT motor resp. the bearing axle.
4. Remove the Philips screw from the other side of the axle.
5. Pull out this axle.
Caution: Do not lose the spring under the washer.
6. Clean this and the guide well and add fresh oil.
7. Unhook the spring from the top of the TT motor.
Attention: Do not stretch and do not lose.
8. Now take out the motor. It is easier if you first remove the carriage and manually release the brake magnet and let the carriage scan forward a little by means of the scan switch. This frees the cam that engages the motor and makes it easier to remove the motor. The principle of the maintenance rod is hopefully known.
9. If necessary, remove the retainer from the turntabe shaft and move it slightly to the left. This gives you more space to get to the spring above the motor.
Caution: Do not lose the fine washers on the shaft and make sure that they are all back in place when reassembling. It gets a little tricky when the retainer has to be put back on, because the washers tend to fall into the groove. Here helps a little oil as "glue".
10. Disassemble the motor.
11. To do this, pull off the white plastic ring from the motor shaft.
12. Remove this retainer-like part from the shaft and make sure to not destroying it. A suitable tool (yes, there is one for this purpose) is well invested money.
13. Take care of the order of the various U-type washers and do not lose them. They need to be installed all, otherwise the motor will not work.
14. Clean bearing and shaft carefully several times.
15.
Caution: Do not pull out the fleece in the motor.
16. It is best to re-assemble with some oil for sinter bearings.
17. Before installing the motor back into carriage, check that it runs smoothly. If necessary, give the motor a few light punches on the axle from the drive end so that the washers settle correctly.
Be careful - if the axle is bent, then the part is only good as a paperweight. This also applies if the motor or the external rotor falls down.

I see a lot of messages on web sites from people complaining that their turn table slows down during play. Before launching into thoughts of what makes the turn table Motor slow, consider the following:

The Motor is an AC synchronous motor which run with the main supply frequency of  50 Hz (Europe), or 60 Hz (USA).
The motors principle design feature is that it will run at a constant speed directly related to the mains frequency usually with a tolerance of better than 0.1%. Any attempt to run at other speeds will cause it to heat up rapidly, and greatly increase its operating current again causing over heating, and even damage to circuit boards.
The Motor produces more than enough torque to overcome slight lapses in lubrication so the MOTOR is least likely to be the problem.

Lubrication: As the principle bearings involved in playing discs are the turn table spindle and synchronous motor, both use a steel shaft running through phosphor bronze bushes as their bearing, they should be treated as self lubricating and never lubricated. If in the past someone did oil them with normal household or bicycle oils, these have a gum base and will increase drag or even lock up the bearing. Using a very light PTFE lubricant the likes of GT 85 will flush old oil, and restore free movement, without introducing more gum. Pivot points and leavers should be lubricated with light PTFE based oils or grease pending on use. The turn table and motor should be very free and spin easily.

Turn Table Tyre: This is usually the problem, during its working life the shaft of the motor rotates against it to producing the turn table rotation, as we have already worked out the motor shaft speed is constant there fore the turn table speed should be constant. Except for the fact that over time the surface of the tyre has been contaminated with dust grease causing it to slip. How you clean the tyre will greatly affect its future life. As replacements turntables are hard to find, The way you clean the tyre will determine how long your machine will last So if you want your machine to last.
DO NOT attempt to improve matters by using abrasives, wire wool or a sharp edge to roughen up the tyre, You are removing future life.
BEWARE of magic liquids to recondition the tyre unless you can guarantee their long term effects on the rubber tyre. I have seen some very sick tyres.

This method I find very successful for cleaning the surface of the tyre without doing it harm. Is to use an ”Artists Putty Rubber” This is a knead able rubber used by artists to clean Highlights on charcoal drawings available from art material suppliers, it has the appearance of a normal rubber until it is kneaded, when it becomes soft pliable and slightly sticky. To clean a tyre and improve its surface condition, break off a small piece of the rubber knead it until just tacky and use it to wipe the surface of the tyre. It will drag quite hard as it pulls on the tyre, releasing the ground in dirt, which sticks to the putty rubber. Fold the putty rubber in on itself to trap the dirt and produce a clean working surface. It takes a little time but slowly the tyre will look less glazed and your speed problem should also be gone.
If you suspect that the tyre has been contaminated with grease or oil, use Isopropyl alcohol, or similar pure alcohol product to clean the surface of the tyre, using a toothbrush to assist in bad cases followed by the putty rubber.  As a finishing note this technique works wonders for old printers that have problems picking up sheets or any application that uses a rorating rubber surface to grip.

17. Meine Prestige 120B läuft nur noch auf 33-1/3 RPM, nicht auf 45.   17. My Prestige 120B plays only with 33-1/3 rpm, not with 45 rpm.

As you know, these jukeboxes have an automix feature. The jukebox recognizes this by the size of the centre hole of the records.
If a record with small centre hole has been clamped on the turntable, a rod is pushed to the left resp. right via a leaf spring at the bottom of the clamping arm.
This in turn blocks the changeover of the two rollers when clutching the gear, so that the jukebox plays with 33-1/3 rpm.
When a record with a large centre hole is being played, the rod gets pushed back again by a small spring, which sits on the same. So the rollers can switch again and the record gets played at 45 rpm.
Often the rods are gummed up, so that once they have been shifted, they cannot return to their original position.

To explain again: The rod ( diameter about 3 mm ) is located directly below the tone arm. It practically runs through the whole carriage. To the right hand side it has a thickening of about 1 cm in diameter and 5 mm width. Behind this there is the said spring, which should push the whole thing back again.
Here should be cleaned thoroughly.
