Picking up and returning the record - general
function
Models with 45 rpm mechanisms |
Laufwerk fährt hin und her.
|
There is a main camshaft in the
mechanism that controls the pick up and return of the records. This
makes half a revolution when the plate is picked up and half a
revolution when it gets returned. One cam on the camshaft is the clutch
shifting cam. A roller of the clutch shifting lever runs on it, which
actuates the clutch via additional levers. The clutch shifting cam has
two recesses of different depths.
As long as the roller is running on the high surface, the mechanism is
in transfer mode, i.e. the record is placed on or returned.
When the roller falls into the shallower notch (the play notch), the
clutch is switched to play mode, i.e. only the turntable is driven. If
the roller falls into the deeper notch (the scan notch), the clutch
switches to scan mode, i.e. the mechanism scans back and forth.
If the roller falls into one of the notches, the state is normally kept
until the trip solenoid attracts.
If the record gets returend immediately without the trip solenoid
attracting, this can only mean that the roller has not fallen into the
notch. It is now necessary to carefully observe what is interfering this.
The clutch shifting lever is pulled down by a relatively strong spring.
It could also be that this spring is lame or overstretched. I have also
found a wrong (too weak) spring at this spot.

Record gets picked up and immediately returned
without playing.
Models with 200 selections and similar ones |
|
The
problem can be caused both mechanically and electrically.
Mechanically: The Seeburg mechanisms 245STxx tend - if
they are not being played very often - to have old lubricants
that cause the clutch or the operating levers to resinify and
become stiff. As a result, the carriage does not enter play mode
and the record is being immediately returned again.
The following picture shows the clutch levers on the right rear
side of the carriage. The red arrows point to the levers that
should move easily and independently of the axle (blue arrow).
If the axle rotates with a lever, this is probably the fault.
To be able to see something, move the carriage all the way to
the right, pull the mechanism carriage forwards and unscrew the
covers.

![laufwerk Laufspule](http://www.jukebox-world.de/Forum/Bilder/Seeburg/Laufwerk-TripCoil.jpg)
schaut (roter Kreis).
ACHTUNG IM BETRIEB: Finger weg! 115Volt AC sind in
der Nähe!
|
|
Electrically: It could be that the record cut-off switch (microswitch)
is "stuck" or defective and therefore the trip coil is already
now in operation instead of at the end of the record - which is
the normal case - and the record is returned. Whether this is
the case can be easily observed by removing the mechnaism cover
and checking whether the large coil picks up again immediately
after the tonearm is set down. The best way to see if the coil
is working is to look at the lever (red circle).
CAUTION DURING OPERATION: Hands off! 115V
AC are in the vicinity! |

Netzteil (Solid State Control Center SCC9).
Schleifpapier! Letzteres zerstört die Kontakte.
Bitte beachten, dass auch
der Tonarmendschalter richtig justiert ist.

The "Trip
Relay", which is plugged into the top of the Control Center
(SCC9), should be checked thoroughly. Experience has shown that
the fault described is due to dirty contacts on this relay. A
replacement for the trip relay can be found at Stamann
Musikboxen.
Remove the door with the two loudspeakers in order to access the
so-called power supply unit (Solid State Control Center SCC9).
A latch must be released - then the SCC can be pulled out. The
"Trip Relay" is plugged into the center (secured with a spring
clip) - see picture. Carefully pull off the relay, remove the
protective cap and then clean the contacts. This is best done
with an eraser or leather or a contact burnisher, but never with
sandpaper! The latter will destroy the contacts.
Please ensure that the tonearm limit switch is also correctly
adjusted.

|
As described above, the
so-called trip relay on the control unit (SCC, DCC) should be checked
and cleaned if necessary. However, if it remains permanently energized
once it has been energized, there are not that many possible faults.
The trip relay is activated by the SCS thyristor as soon as a selected
record is found. The thyristor remains conductive as long as current
flows through it. To terminate the conductive state, the current through
the thyristor must therefore be interrupted. For this purpose, there is
a circuit (contact 1E1 of the trip relay and contact 3M1 on the carriage)
which short-circuits the thyristor. Contact 1E1 is closed when the trip
relay is energized, contact 3M1 is closed in scan mode. When a selected
record is found, the thyristor activates the trip relay (and thus the
trip solenoid on the carriage is also activated).
As soon as the trip relay is activated, the current no longer flows
through the thyristor, but through the above-mentioned circuit 1E1 and
3M1, so the thyristor blocks again. As a result, contact 3M1 opens and
the trip relay de-energizes.
If contact 3M1 is dirty or poorly adjusted, this can lead to the error
described. Contact 3M1 is the lowest contact on the large contact set at
the top front of the carriage. It must be closed when the carriage is in
scan mode

|
It sounds as if the magnet of
the tonearm cut-off switch has "wandered" somehow. The cut-off switch (the
transparent plastic part at the bottom left of the tonearm) is a
reed contact that gets moved by
magnetism. The magnet is located exactly opposite (approx. 7x 4mm).
The glue often wears off after a long time and the magnet slips down
into the mechanism or gets stuck somewhere.
You can find further help on
Tony Miller's website:

Alle 45 rpm Modelle |

Always the same record gest played again until
the cancel button gets pushed. All 45 rpm models |
Ansonsten schafft
eine gründliche Reinigung Abhilfe. |
|
This is presumably a mechanical
problem. There is the safety lever above the lever mechanism for the
clutch. This is a horizontal bolt at about the height of the turntable,
which is pushed to the left (seen from the rear) while the records are
picked up into playing position or returned into the magazine.
When the record is back in the magazine, the safety lever gets released
and must move with spring force to the right. If the record is not yet
fully in the magazine (because it has got stuck somewhere) or if the
bolt is stiff, the lever falls onto the roller at the left end and
prevents the clutch from switching to scan mode. The record is therefore
picked up again and played again.
It is probably sufficient to spray the safety lever and associated parts
with a spray oil (e.g. Ballistol) to make it move smoothly again.
Otherwise, thorough cleaning will help.

US-10 Cent Kredits
-
SELECTION PASS
(NO / YES):

Presumably all 160 tracks have
been preselected using the
battery trick and these are now being played. When all the tracks
have been played, the carriage should scan into its park position.
The click after entering the third digit is normal. It is the solenoid
on the scan control unit that controls the scan. It is an indication
that the electronics have recognized a selection. However, it is
possible that the selection has not been entered.
This is the function of the service switches:
-
Mech. Start:
Starts the carriage, which moves back and forth once and then stops
on the right. The switch must be set to "No" for normal playing
operation.
-
Mech. Stop:
By pressing twice, the carriage stops.
-
Record Reject:
The record currently playing is interrupted and returned.
-
Credit:
Releases a selection without inserting a coin, factory-set to the
amount of a US 10 cent credit.
-
SELECTION PASS (NO /
YES):
If set to NO, the read-out pulse is suppressed and any selections
that may have been set are neither read out nor deleted.
When set to YES, a search can be started using MECH START, but not
via the keyboard.
Now, before any repair can be
perfomed, all saved selections must be deleted. This is normally done by
playing them. It is faster is to disconnect the pulse line (cinch plug)
from the digital control center and start a search run (with the service
switch or by selecting a title). If the pulse line is disconnected, the
selections are deleted but not played. If the carriage then moves to the
park position, all selections should be deleted. Then plug the pulse
line back in and start another search run with the service switch. The
carriage should now only scan back and forth twice.
If this is not the case, the
most likely fault possibility is a poor ground connection between the
tormat and the pulse amplifier.
Let's take a closer look at what happens during readout: When a current
pulse (precisely defined by the electronics) is sent through a magnetic
core via the Tormat contacts, a voltage pulse is induced in the pulse
line. However, this pulse is too small to ignite the thyristor (pulse
amplifier). If the magnetic core has been remagnetized by the current
pulse, the resulting voltage pulse is much higher and can ignite the
thyristor.
It is also conceivable, but rather unlikely, that the read-out voltage
is too high or that there is a fault in the pulse amplifier.
