Vorab genereller Hinweis:
-
NIEMALS
|
|
A general note in advance:
-
NEVER
replace the fuses with higher ones or even
bypass them
When replacing fuses, always make sure to use correct values and tripping
time. These are always indicated on the respective component or sometimes on
the fuse cap. A wrong fuse can cause serious consequences: Blown
transformers, motors and coils. Finding replacements is often difficult -
and will never be cheap.

|
Rattling noise in carriage: There is a rattling
noise in the carriage. It can be heard from the search process until the
record gets returned.
All 45 rpm models incl. M100A |
Hierfür kommen mehrere Ursachen in Frage:
-
Mechanische Defekte wie lose Teile sollten
ausgeschlossen werden
-
Gummikupplung zwischen Motor und Schnecke: diese
sollte schön weich und geschmeidig sein. Ist die hart/porös, kann das zu
Nebengeräuschen führen.
Funktion und Position der Motorkupplung (45 RPM-Modelle; auch
M100
A)
-
|
|
There are several possible
causes for this:
-
Mechanical defects such as
loose parts should be excluded.
-
The rubber coupling between
the motor and worm:
This should be soft and smooth. If it is hard/porous, this can lead
to background noise.
Function and position of the motor coupling (45
RPM models; also M100A)
-
If the motor clutch does not open far
enough due to a gummy gear, it will rub against the driving pin,
which can be heard as a rhythmic clacking noise.
-
There is a rubber bumper
below the motor.
This should be soft to absorb the vibrations of the motor.
-
The rubber mounts on top
and at bottom of the motor
should also be soft to absorb the vibrations of the motor.
-
The rubbers in the turntable should be
soft to prevent background noise and sound fluctuations.

Carriage scans continously - all models
with Tormat |
Danach sollte
kontrolliert werden, ob alle Kontakte richtig schalten. Die Kontakte des
Tormats sollten
ebenfalls gereinigt werden, danach mit etwas
Ballistol
(o.ä.) pflegen. Nun
sollte es wieder funktionieren. |
|
On my Seeburg Golden Jet (S100,
ES100), the carriage constantly moves back and forth after selection but
does not find any. Otherwise everything works. If a lever is pulled
while scanning, it picks up the record and plays it. It then returns it
and moves back and forth again. When it has moved back and forth twice,
it stops automatically.
Answer:
The power supply unit should be overhauled and all contacts on the
carriage should be cleaned. The contacts behind the motor are also
important here, as this is very important for the selection. Then check
that all contacts are switching correctly. The contacts of the
Tormat
should also be cleaned and then treated with a
little Ballistol (or similar). Now it should work again. |

V200 (1955) |
|
After selection the carriage scans continously,
valve (tube) 5U4 doesn't have any heating voltage - from V200 (1955) |
Magnetkernspeicher (TORMAT)
-
einschalten, wenn der Kontaktblock auf einem Kontakt der Tormat-Einheit steht;

A Seeburg AY has not accepted a
title for some time now. This means pressing the pushbuttons is
possible and the carriage will start. However, no record is taken and
played. It is also noticeable that the 5U4GB tube no longer has any
heating voltage. What could be the cause?
Answer: This error can have various causes. Since all Seeburg
models from the V200 (1955) - STD4 (1978) work with a magnetic core
memory (TORMAT))
for the selection memory, troubleshooting is not that easy. That is to
say it is not possible to see whether a selection has been stored. The
first thing to check is whether the carriage is working mechanically.
Mechanical function of the
carriage: There is a metal lever to the right of the tone arm and
behind the large set of contacts. If you push this lever up while the
turntable is running, the turntable must stop and play a record. If this
works, the carriage is mechanically OK, the fault is then located in the
TORMAT control unit. Fortunately, the TORMAT unit itself is almost never
broken, often the contacts are oxidized. The TORMAT control unit
consists of three parts. The most common faults:
-
Write-in contacts:
The WRITE IN contacts in the credit unit are responsible for writing
in. These are finger-shaped double contacts that lie on a lever with
an insulating part and a metal part. This lever gets moved by the
subtract coil so that the metal part will be pushed under the
contacts and connects them. There are probably two of these set of
contacts (for standard selection and for EP selection) located in
the jukebox.
These contacts and the metal plates must be cleaned and the contacts
must press easily against the lever.
-
Read-Out: The READ
OUT takes place via the contacts on the bottom side of the TORMAT
unit. The contact block, which is moved with the carriage, has four
spring-loaded contact pins that are connected with thin wires. These
wires may be broken. The contact block may have loosened so that the
contact pins can no longer touch the contacts on the TORMAT unit.
The current to these contacts comes from the carriage via the
left-right REVERSING SWITCH at the very front and via the DETENT
SWITCH behind the motor. The latter in particular tends to have
contact problems.
The lateral adjustment of the Tormat unit is also very
important for the function. When the DETENT SWITCH (on the carriage,
behind the motor at the bottom) is closed, the contact pin must be
exactly centered on the corresponding contact rivet. The detent
switch is operated by a lever on a star wheel. This lever causes the
rhythmic click when the carriage scans back and forth. The contact
generates the read-out pulses. It must switch on briefly each time
the contact block is on a contact on the Tormat unit; means during
one back and forth scan the contact gets closed 200 times.
The voltage is generated in the control unit (rectifier tube 6X4)
and stabilizes two stabilizer tubes (OA2). These stabilizer tubes
glow bluish/violet during operation. When the carriage is scanning,
they should flicker periodically at the same rate as the noise being
generated by the detent switch. If they do this, the READ OUT
circuit should be OK.
So called battery test to test the read-out sequence -
tube-equipped models:
Disconnect the RCA plug from the pulse amplifier and briefly connect
the negative terminal of a 1.5 V battery to earth and the positive
terminal to the center pin of the plug. This will select all titles.
Then re-connect the cable and select a record (to start the scanning
process). The service switch must be in the PLAY position. All
titles should now be played in sequence. If this is the case, the
Read Out process including the pulse amplifier is OK and the fault
is in the Write In Sequence.
So called battery test to test the read out sequence -
models with semiconductor components:
Disconnect the RCA plug from the pulse amplifier and briefly connect
the negative pole of the battery to the center pin of the plug and
the positive pole to ground. This will select all titles. Then
re-connect the cable and select a record (to start the scanning
process). The service switch must be in the PLAY position. All
titles should now be played in sequence. If this is the case, the
read-out sequence including the pulse amplifier is OK and the fault
is in the Write- In-Sequence.
-
Pulse amplifier (SENSE):
A thin cable with an RCA plug comes out of the TORMAT unit and is
connected to the pulse amplifier. The pulse amplifier works with a
12AX7 valve that triggers the thyratron (valve 2050). The valve 2050
is basically a switch that activates the trip coil in the carriage.
If you pull out the 12AX7 while the carriage is scanning, the 2050
should light up, the carriage should stop and play a record. If this
does not happen, the 2050 is probably defective. The 12AX7 could
also be defective, but this is not very likely.

|
After selection the carriage scans continously,
doesn't stop anymore
Models with DCC (Digital Control Center) |
-
Eine Sicherung ist defekt
-
Die erste Spule ist
dauernd angezogen. Ursache könnte sein, daß der entsprechende
Serviceschalter in eingeschalteter Stellung klemmt.
-
-
Das Schaltwerk klemmt
und dadurch wird der Kontakt nicht geöffnet.
|
|
The search sequence is
controlled by the Play Control Unit in the Digital Control Center. This
is a switching mechanism with two coils and one contact. Each time a
selection is made (or the corresponding service switch is pressed), one
of the two coils is energized and closes the contact.
As long as the contact is closed, the motor in the carriage runs (search
sequence, picking up a record, returning or playing). Each time the
carriage reaches the right end position, the second coil in the Play
Control Unit is activated and resets the switching mechanism by one step.
After the second reset, the contact is opened and the motor is switched
off.
The following faults are possible:
-
A fuse is defective
-
The first coil is
permanently energized. The cause could be that the corresponding
service switch is stuck in the ON position.
-
The switching mechanism is
not reset. The contact for this is located on the searcher below the
Tormat. The contact may be misaligned or bent or the direction of
scanning may be changed too early so that the contact does not reach
the shifting ramp.
-
A jammed switching
mechanism - therefore the contact is not opened.

Turntable without a record
spins continously, no selection is possible.
From M100A |
|
|
The carriage is positioned in
front of a record compartment, the motor rotates continuously even
though no single is loaded. This pulse cannot be suppressed.
Answer:
If the turntable is running and nothing is moving apart from the motor,
the carriage is in play mode (even if no record was in the compartment
and therefore no record could be loaded).
To interrupt this, it is normally sufficient to gently move the tonearm
all the way towards the turntable so that the tonearm cut-off switch
gets activated. You can also press the cancel button (next to the volume
control) or the cancel switch on the service switch box to interrupt
this. The service switch must be in the "PLAY" position.
If this does not help, the
playing mode can be stopped manually.
For this purpose, there is a lever next to the tone arm, behind the
contact sets, which does not seem to operate anything. If this lever is
lifted briefly, the playing mode should be interrupted and the lift arm
should move to the home position. The carriage would then have to scan
back and forth again to play the next selected record. |
|
Beim Wählen wird die derzeit spielende
Single unterbrochen und zurückgelegt. |
|
When selecting the currently
played record gets interrupted and returned. |
|
|
If you make a selection, the
Seeburg 222 (Channel) immediately picks up the record on which the
carriage is currently positioned.
If you press another selection while being played, the current record is
interrupted immediately and the carriage moves to the next selected
record. If you press again, it gets interrupted again, and so on.
The same happens if you select a title via the wallbox.
Answer:
This sounds like a ground fault. The Tormat control is quite sensitive
in this respect. You should check whether the RCA plug on the pulse
amplifier is oxidized or damaged. The contacts of the large plug
connected to the control unit, should be cleaned and treated with a
contact spray (e.g. Contact 60, Ballistol - Caution: Never use a spray
from a gas station) to ensure a good earth connection here too.
One of the resistors could also be defective (e.g. the 56 kOhm). |

Credit is established via the
switch at the Single Pricing Unit. Then a selection is made, e.g. K1.
The motor starts to pick up the record and at the same time the Single
Pricing Unit makes a loud rattling noise.
After switching the jukebox off and on again, the title will be played
to the end, and the rattling noise returns after the next selection.
Answer:
It is very likely that the credit unit needs to be cleaned, de-resinfied
and re-lubricated, possibly even adjusted new. Within the years, old
oils and greases gum-up and stick together to a viscous mass. As a
result, some parts are not flexible enough and contacts are dirty, so
that they do not switch precise and well any longer. |

Black & Gray Boxes •••
Red Boxes |
Wahlablauf bei Modellen mit
DRD1/DTP1 (Black &
Gray Boxes)
Modelle ab LS3 bis ST4, außer SB100): allgemeine Beschreibung |
|
Selection sequence in models with DRD1/DTP1
(Black & Gray Boxes)
Modelle from LS3 to ST4, except SB100: General description |
|
The selection sequence is
roughly as follows:
Inserted coins are stored in the Black Box and converted into a number
of possible selections using the program card. If no program card is
inserted, there is unlimited permanent credit.
The Black Box also accepts the selection. It checks whether only
permitted keys have been pressed. If a digit is not permitted (e.g. "3"
as the first digit), "RESET AND RESELECT" lights up or flashes and
further input is blocked. If entries are permitted, "1st Digit" lights
up after the first digit, "2nd Digit" lights up after the second digit
and these displays disappear again after the third digit.
The sequence of digits entered is stored in the Black Box. After
entering the third digit, the data packet is transmitted to the Gray Box
via buffer stages in the DCC. After transmitting, the data is deleted
again and the Black Box is ready for a new selection - if credit is
still available
In the Gray Box, the data is decoded and sent to a thyristor chain,
which activates the write-in circuits in the Tormat. At the same time,
the addition coil on the scan unit is also activated.
There are three operating voltages, -27 volts, -13 volts and +8.2 volts.
These must be relatively accurate, otherwise the Black and Gray Box will
malfunction unpredictably. It is important that there are no voltage
dips. |

Wichitg: Drehrichtung merken.
|
|
1. Option:
This is simply due to the "Black & Gray Boxes", as the service manual so
nicely names it.
Clean all the contacts on the carriage and re-adjust them if necessary.
If you are not completely technically unskilled, the normally closed and
normally open function will be easy to understand.
I use a "Dremel" (high speed multi-tool) with a brass brush for cleaning.
(Don't whine to me about gold contacts. After 25 years, there's nothing
left on the actual buttons anyway). That works quite well. Don't forget
the contact at the back right of the carriage behind the motor which is
particularly important for the selection.
If you now need to re-adjust the contacts (at least you should check the
adjustment), then switch off the jukebox and release the machine by
hand. Then turn it slowly. Important:
Remember the direction of rotation. This is
a great way to see at which moment a contact opens and closes. With a
little thinking, you will quickly find the necessary switch positions.
Admittedly, it's not easy, but it can be done. However, if you have two
left hands in respect of technical issues, you'd better leave it alone.
The small micro-switch on the keyboard is also very important for the
write-in sequence. This must switch properly every time the pushbutton
is pressed, otherwise the wrong signals will reach the computer.
The cancelling problem is probably caused by a magnet that has fallen
off. There is a "reed
contact" on the left-hand side of the
tonearm, which is switched by the magnet mentioned before. Unfortunately,
even the best glue wears off after 20 years. These magnets then often
fall off (if you are unlucky, they block the tonearm).
One more thing: In these jukeboxes the "Tormat"
or the so-called "preselection unit" is only defective in 1 out of 1000
cases. Provided it has been cleaned and lightly oiled (e.g. with Contact 60, Ballistol - Caution: Never use a spray
from a gas station).
2. Option:
If individual selections are not accepted, the Tormat, i.e. the storage
unit with the contact rivets sitting below the record magazine, may be
misaligned. If this is the case, in my experience, records that are far
to the right or to the left in the magazine are often not played, even
though they have been selected. Occasionally, they are only accepted
after several scans - this proves that the write-in is basically working,
but the carriage's pickup does not recognize the polarized magnet in the
Tormat.
Remedy: Loosen the Tormat at its fastenings and move it very slightly
horizontally to the right or left, lock it in place and try out whether
the selections that were not played before are now will be played.
A few attempts are usually necessary, but then it should work. There are
adjustment instructions from Seeburg, but in my experience the
"experimental" setting works better. |
