Gabel is given credit to the first coin-operated phongraph which offered a choice of selection on records in 1906. The "Automatic Machine & Tool Company", later kown as "John Gabel Manufacturing Company" was founded in 1898 and closed in March 1948. Their model Starlite is the first jukebox with light-up pilasters. In 1949 the Gabel Company was bought by Rock-Ola. John Gabel died on Dec 23rd 1955 at the age of 83.

Modernized / Cut Down Jukeboxes by Gabel themselves
Bill Butterfield: "Gabel had a policy of recalling all of their machines to the factory so they could "modernize" them once the sound era got going in the late 1920's. Sometimes you can guess the time of modification by the type of amplifier they used. It is hard to find two of them the same."
