| This exhibition features “animals” that neither want to be fed nor petted. In addition to illustrating the multifaceted relationship between humans and animals, they represent the spirit of innovation and the technical capabilities of their time. Since the end of the 16th century, there have been efforts to mechanically replicate animals. With the emergence of coin-operated machines in the second half of the 19th century, the possibilities for creating animal automata expanded. Thanks to mass production, large segments of the population were henceforth able to make use of these “animals.” The capabilities of such automata were diverse: from selling chocolate, playing music, or testing muscle strength to delivering electric shocks, they continue to amaze young and old alike to this day. |
