David Cullen Rockola gründete 1927 in Chicago die "Target Skill Machine Company". Man entwickelte einen Kaugummi-Verkaufszusatz für den damals bekannten "ABT Target" und produzierte im weiteren Verlauf Waren-, Spiel- und Verkaufsgeräte sowie Flipper, Einarmige Banditen und Waagen. Da sein Nachname oft falsch ausgesprochen wurde, fügte David einen Bindestrich in diesen ein – und aus Rockola wurde Rock-Ola. 1932 nennt sich die Firma in  "Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation" um und der Markt für Musikboxen wurde 1935 betreten. 1940 wurde das Programm um Radio-Ponographen erweitert und verschiedene Modelle für den Heimgebrauch wurden produziert.
Der Hauptsitz war und blieb in Chicago, USA. Aber Rock-Ola produzierte auch in Mexiko (INSSA, 1954), Venezuela und Australien. NOVA als Generalimporteur für Deutschland und Europa (bis 1982), baute auch Geräte selbst zusammen statt sie komplett zu importieren – vermutlich aus kosten- und zollrechtlichen Gründen.
Es ist erwähnenswert, daß sich David Rockola und A.W. Adickes von NOVA bereits 1930 kennen lernten und schon 1939 planten, Musikboxen in Europa zu vertreiben. Jedoch machte der 2. Weltkrieg dieses Vorhaben vorerst zunichte, und der Plan mußte weitere 14 Jahre auf Umsetzung warten.
In Dänemark wurden durch die Firma Nordisk Automat Service mindestens drei Modelle in Lizenz gebaut.
Ab Herbst 1982 übernahm die Novomat AG Basel den Generalimport für Europa außer BeNeLux. Der Vertrag dafür wurde am 22.09.1982 von Donald Rock-Ola und Gustav Jeker unterzeichnet. Für die BeNeLux-Staaten übernahm weiterhin Brabo Antwerpen den Import.
David C. Rock-Ola starb 1993 im Alter von 96 Jahren. Er und seine Frau Margaret wurden auf dem Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, IL, beerdigt.
Kurz zuvor noch, im September 1992, verkaufte David C. Rock-Ola seine Firma an Antique Apparatus (gegründet 1977) mit Glenn Streeter als Eigentümer. Antique Apparatus nennt sich seit diesem Zeitpunkt "Rock-Ola".
Juli 2019: Rock-Ola wird an "Games Room Company", UK, verkauft, Inhaber Alexander Walder-Smith.

David Cullen Rockola founded the "Target Skill Machine Company " in 1927. A gum ball vending attachment to the famous ABT Target was developed, but later other arcade, vending and coin-operated machines like pinballs, slot machines and scales were produced. Because people often mis-pronounciated his last name David C. added the hyphen to his last name – and Rockola became Rock-Ola. In 1932 they renamed to "Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation", and stepped into the jukebox business not before 1935. In 1940 Rock-Ola entered also into the radio-ponograph field and produced various radio-phonograph combinations for home use.
Rock-Ola's main head office was in Chicago, USA. But they did produce in other countries like Mexico (INSSA, 1954), Venezuela and Australia, too.
NOVA, the general importer for Germany and Europe, did assemble some machines instead of importing them in one piece; probably due to some cost and custom reasons.
It is remarkable that David C. Rockola and A.W. Adickes of the German NOVA already met for the first time in 1930 and planned to distribute Rock-Ola jukeboxes in Europe in 1939. But WW2 stopped this and the plan had to wait for its realisation another 14 years.
In Denmark the Nordisk Automat Service did produce at least three models under license.
Starting in fall 1982 the general import for Europe (except BeNeLux) was taken over by the Swiss company Novomat AG, Basel. The contract was signed by Donald Rock-Ola and Gustav Jeker on Sep 22, 1982. For BeNeLux the import was still done by Brabo, Antwerp.
David C. Rockola passed away at the age of 96 in 1993. He and his wife Margaret are buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, IL.
In September 1992, just shortly before passing away, Rock-Ola sold his company to Antique Apparatus (founded in 1977). Antique Apparatus was renamed into "Rock-Ola" at this time.

Antique Apparatus was founded by Glenn Streeter in 1977. They were the first company producing the Nostalgic jukeboxes. The first vinyl Nostalgia jukebox was built in 1982 and used a Rowe mechanism.

Rock-Ola: Since 09 /1992
In September 1992 Antique Apparatus acquired the Rock-Ola Mfg.Co. From this time on the logo "Rock-Ola" was used both on their models and the ID plate, too. In June 2009 Rock-Ola sold the commercial section of jukeboxes to AMI Entertainment. They still produced jukeboxes for home use without coin equipment.
