Genetic analysis have shown that the dog started developing from the wolf about 135.000 years ago. Yet it is highly unlikely that the wolvess were simply domesticated. Contrary to dogs they loose their tameness when they become young grown ups. It is assumed that there had been some wolves that were more trusting and thus dared to go near the upcoming settlings of men. They discovered this way an ecological niche, because there always had been some leftovers. Thus the more trusting wolves had a selective benefit and over thousands of years they evolved into their own species: The dog. Humans were able to breed these for special purposes and thus ensured their survival and expansion.
One of these purposes was known in Ancient Egypt already: Hunting.

The Dachshund is bred particularly for hunting badgers which means "Dachs" in German, hence the name (Note: Hund means dog). The short-haired dachshund has very short and straight hair that is very easy-care. It is softer and fluffier than the coat of the wire-haired dachshund, as the name implies. It has to enter burrows on its own, so that it is very self-confident and self-determined. This often makes the dachshund quite obstinate. Elwyn Brooks White (US author) wrote one day about his own dachshund Fred: "I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command. ... He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do." (Source: "One Man's Meat", E.B. White, 1944).

Both our plush versions, this short-haired and the wire-haired (Kö-F4090) dachshund, are brothers and equally fluffy and getting along very well together. But even alone the short-haired dachshund is a wonderful playing companion in a child's bedroom or a pretty exhibit in the living room.
