Genetic analysis have shown that the dog started developing from the wolf about 135.000 years ago. Yet it is highly unlikely that the wolvess were simply domesticated. Contrary to dogs they loose their tameness when they become young grown ups. It is assumed that there had been some wolves that were more trusting and thus dared to go near the upcoming settlings of men. They discovered this way an ecological niche, because there always had been some leftovers. Thus the more trusting wolves had a selective benefit and over thousands of years they evolved into their own species: The dog. Humans were able to breed these for special purposes and thus ensured their survival and expansion.
One of these purposes was known in Ancient Egypt already: Hunting.

Every modern Border Collies descend from "Old Hemp", an exceptional herding dog, that was born in 1893. Collies are oustandingly smart dogs, often considered being the most intelligent dog breed. They are quick learners, follow orders immediatly and even solve problems autonomously. Moreover they are very attentive and eager, but neither aggressive nor nervous, which makes them extremly popular as herding dogs. They are fine pet dogs if their demands of physical and mental exercise are met.

Our plush Border Collie "Mary" has a great demand too, namely for long sessions of cuddling and playing. She will learn quick and be attentive to the new home. Maybe this will offer a little toy flock to herd?
