Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides), also known as enok or tanuki, belong to the dog family and come originally from East Asia. Via Russia, where they were bred and freed into the wild for its beautiful fur, they did spread westwards: Finland, Poland, Romania, Austria - and since 1961 also in Germany.
The roughly fox-sized raccoon dog prefers to live in forests with dense undergrowth, in diversely structured lowland areas with fields, small lakes, marshy meadows and on embankments and use deserted fox and badger dens. As a shy, crepuscular and nocturnal animal that neither hunts nor climbs, it is an omnivore. It favours fruit and insects, but ultimately eats whatever it can find.
After a gestation period of nine weeks, the fawn gives birth to five to ten puppies, which are cared for by both parents. In winter, these forest animals hibernate. Incidentally, tanuki are monogamous and stay together as a pair for life.

Our tanuki can also be envied for its soft and cosy fur. Fortunately, it does not get hunted because of this, but likes to be spoilt with extensive cuddles. It does not hibernate in winter, because even then it wants to discover the world and experience fun adventures.
Just one more tanuki as a partner would be nice.
