The mammoth (Mammuthus) belongs to an extincted genus of elephants. The origin of these large mammals is in Africa, but over the millennia they also colonized East Asia, North America and Europe. In the course of Earth's history, a total of five different species of mammoths existed: The Southern Mammoth, the oldest of this species ca. 5 Mio. years ago, then the Steppe Mammoth, the Prairie Mammoth, the Woolly Mammoth and the smallest of its kind, the Pygmy Mammoth.
The last Wolloy Mammoths became extinct about 4000 years ago in Siberia and the the Pygmy Mammoth in California. For a long time it was said that hunting by humans had led to extinction. Today, it is believed that the end of the Ice Age and the resulting change in habitat was the cause.
Characteristic for all mammoths were the short high skull and the long tusks. However, while the first mammoths did not have a shaggy dense fur, this developed with the ice age about 2 million years ago and belongs to the typical image of a mammoth for us today.

Our adult mammoth also looks like this. Fortunately it is not extinct and
does not need a the Ice Age to feel comfortable. A children's playroom or an environment with other animals to play with is quite enough. Or maybe even together with the small mammoth - shown right on thrird photo - would be great.
