The quokka (Setonix brachyurus) is a species of marsupial from the kangaroo family and is also known as the short-tailed kangaroo. It lives in the southwest of Australia, primarily on the offshore islands Rottnest Island and Bald Island. They prefer dense forests and swamps as well as open woodland and bushland. They only stay in dry areas if there is enough fresh water, shade and plants available.
Quokkas are nocturnal and forage for food at night. Like all kangaroos, they are herbivores and feed on grasses, herbs and leaves. And like cows they chew their cud. During the day, they sleep hidden in the thicket.
The female quokka usually gives birth to a single joey after a gestation period of 26 to 28 days. As with other kangaroos, quokkas have a delayed birth: This means that the female mates again immediately after giving birth, but the newly conceived embryo only begins to grow when the first young dies or is weaned. This can take up to nine or ten months.

Quokkas are an endangered species. The total population is currently estimated at 8,000 to 17,000 animals, of which 4,000 to 8,000 are on Rottnest Island. The islands offer these small animals, which always seem to be smiling, special protection: There are no dogs, cats, or foxes and car traffic is very limited.

Fortunately, our quokka is not endangered. Islands are not necessary to protect it from enemies. A nursery or an environment with other animals to play with and a human to look after them is all that is needed.
Have a close look: Doesn't it smile whimsical at you planning what to do next?
