Canary, green

Product 8 of 54

The Domestic Canary or simply Canary (Serinus canaria forma domestica) is a dometicated form of the wild Canary which live on the Canary Islands, Azores and Madeira. The yellow plumage is probably known best, but there are colours like white, brownish, green and red as well. Last was created by hybridization of the Red Siskin.
After man has had domesticated the Canary about 500 years ago, the singing of this little bird did even change. The Canaries do have great hearing and are not only able to differ melodies, but also to keep them in their brain. They even can imitate sounds of other birds or other noises and implement them in their own singing.

Of course for the great singing the Canary is most known. But did you know that this little bird was irreplacable in coal mining in the 19th century? Canaries are second to none in warning against toxic gases or bad air conditions. Did the Canary stop to sing or unluckily did fell off its pole, coal miners knew that working conditions were not safe.
How many lifes had been rescued, is not known. For sure coal miners were grateful for this little bird. In St. Andreasberg, located in German Harz mountain, a little museum dedicated to these "Canary in the coal mine" can be found.
