The green woodpecker (picus viridis) is a bird that is widely spread across Europe. Its name refers to the typical green feathering. With its yellow rump, the red cap and black mask it surely is a gorgeous bird. In 2014 in Germany it was devoted as "Bird of the Year" by the NABU (German Society for Nature Conservation).

The green woodpecker is solitary. It feeds of ants and larvae, that it digs up from the ground and hooks with its tongue that ends with a barb. Thus it often sits on the ground instead of trees. The bird prefers light forests over denser ones where it can stay a life long. Like other woodpeckers too, this one nests in holes in trees. Those get built mainly in old trees. Both male and female bird build together their nest which can be seen as a ritual to bring them closer to each other. Both also take care of breeding and feeding the offsprings.

The green woodpecker is known for its laughing call, that can be heard mainly during mating season. On first sight it seems that our green woodpecker rather stays mute. But listen carefully: Don't you hear its laughing and being happy to get a new home soon?
