Edible dormouses (Glis glis) belong to the family of rodents and are related to squirrels. Like them they are outstanding climbers, but the edible dormouse is active during night instead of the day. It is slightly smaller, and generally differs in looks. It has round ears and its tail is less bushy. Its eyes are relatively large so it can see in the dark.

Edible dormice were a delicacy in Roman times, which probably led to their name. In German, its name "Siebenschläfer" refers to sleeping for seven months in winter, but this is not always accurate. They sometimes start to hibernate in September and will not stop until May. They do not stockpile any food and thus have to build up large fat reserves. Often several dormice use one nest and huddle together to hibernate, thus they loose less energy for keeping warm.

In its new home too, our dormouse will like to roll up in his nest and huddle with someone.
