Lemurs (Lemuriformes) are a species of strepsirrhine primates that are endemic to Madagascar. They developed due to the long evolutionary seperation in 60 different subspecies. Today many of them are endangered by increased land clearance by fires and additional hunting.
The name derives from the Latin words "lemures" and "forma" which means as much as "spirits" and "form".

Ring-tailed lemurs are the most known subspecies which live in the dry forests of the southern and western parts of the island and feed mostly on fruits, flowers, leaves and bark. They live in groups of normally 13 animals that are a family. The females stay in these groups, whereas the males have to leave when they are grown. Thus the family groups are always led by one dominant female. Ring-tailed lemur are easily recognized with their ringed long, tails - hence the name. Meanwhile they are reknown especially because of their appearance in the films „Madagascar“, where a colony of lemurs is drawn into the adventures.

We are not sure whether our plush lemur "Luis" is a female or a male as they are not easily distinguished by appeareance. But surely it will fit perfectly into your family and be a great friend. And don't worry if you should find it sitting in the lotus position one day: Its living relatives too like to get the first warming beams of sunlight in this position.

Wunderbarer Lemur!
