The lion (panthera leo) is closely related to the tiger, but different environmental influences resulted in a different evolution. That is why the lion is a little smaller and chunkier. This makes it less agile, but not the slightest bit less strong. Opposite to the tiger the lion loves open spaces, just like the African savannah, which it typically inhabits. At the same time it is very social, lions live in prides, and hunt in groups – a unique features among cats. However, it is the lionesses that go hunting. The male lions are fully occupied with defending the pride area against mostly conspecific intruders.

The up to 10 lionesses care for the cubs and go hunting together. They are unevenly adapted for hunting. Since they are smaller and more agile they have more perseverance and can strike more quickly. All the more the males tend to overheat because of their thick manes, which is quite a disadvantage when trying to chase their prey.
The catch is justly shared to ensure the survival of every member of the pride.

Our lioness "Mara" is not only very lovely to its offspring but as well to her "King of the animal" called "Talek" - see photo 2.They often stay close together and enjoy every day. Like you do, don't you?
