Next to seven more species the brown bear (Ursus arctos) is mostly spread. It lives basically by itself on a fix territory: in the velds of tundra, alpine meadows and dark forests. The brown bear can be found in North America, Skandinavia, Russia, Japan, East Europe, the Near East, China and in Mongolia.
In South and Middle Europe in Italy, Spain, France and Austria some brown bears could be settled again.

Brown bears are omnivores, but berries and honey are a special treat for them - similar to us humans. During fall they eat so much that they can gain up to 3 kg (6 lb) each day. This is necessary, since they have to live off their fat layer while they hibernate. At the end of the winter their cubs are born, often two. Their mother cares for them the first two or three years of their life, until they become independent and search for their own territory.

Though the bear is one of the largest predator on land, as the teddy bear it is (probably) most popular for children. One can snuggle with it, and the teddy bear gives solace to children in moments of sadness.
