Actually the "black panther" is not a species of its own, the name is commonly applied to any large cat that has a black mutation of fur, especially leopards (panthera pardus) or jaguars (panthera onca). This variation is called melanism and is the opposite of albinism. The mutation is passed on recessively and thus relatively seldom, apart from zoos, where they are bred intentionally.

Both leopards and jaguars are loners, hence the black panther is too. They are known for their climbing abilities. As none of their adversaries like lion or hyenna can climb on the trees they seek shelter in the treetops and store their prey there. After done work they lie down on the branches and enjoy the shadow and fresh air, having a nap.

Both species have a gestation period of three months, the male leopards even help their mates with the upbringing. After three months the young panthers start to accompany their mother on the hunt, at that time they already are excellent climbers. Until their second year of age they stay with their mother, from whom they learn and are protected.

Luckily, baby panther "Rangi" does not need to fear any predators, still it likes to seek shelter in friendly arms.
