Ladybird

Everybody knows them, the cute little ladybird with their typical red colour and the black dots. Often they are considered to bring luck, especially the coccinella septempunctata, the one with the seven dots on its back. This is the most common ladybird of 70 different species living in Germany.

All ladybirds have a round body, that fulfills a very important function. For they like to eat lice, that are often protected by ants. If the ants attack the beetles, they pull their feet under their elytra and lay flat on the ground, thus even the strong claws of the ants have little to bite at.

Lately, because of their liking of lice and other vermin, they have been used in commercial agriculture too. In some places that resulted in a massive population growth. Maybe this could be seen as an onrush of luck?

With our little ladybird luck comes in small but mighty doses. And most definitely it can bring happiness to both children and adults.
