The badger (Meles) belongs to the family of Mustelids and is its biggest member. It inhabits almost every continent but differs in size and look on each of them. He is easily recognized by his pale head with the typical black stripes that run across his eyes. The fur is gray to black, with the legs and the underparts usually being darker.

Badgers mainly eat plants, but they are omnivores. They have broad fore-paws with long claws, with which they can dig very well, not only for earthworms, insects, roots etc. Owing their paws they are real master builder: Their setts have a depth of 5 m and a diameter of 30 m. Being passed on from one generation to the next the setts get extended continously and can reach a tunnel system of several hundred meters. Often more than one family of badgers and sometimes even some foxes inhabit them together.

In the wild the badger is to be seen very seldom not only because of being nocturnal. It is a very cautious animal. This might explain the German name "Grimbart" in fables which refers to even-tempered and thoughtful characteristics.

In 2010 in Germany the badger was proclaimed the "Animal of the Year" by the SDWi (union to protect German wild animals).

Our badger shows same characteristics but is less shy than its real relatives. It does not need a home that big either, but having a family or a (plush) animal around would be appreciated.
