Chipmunks (Tamias) belong to the family of sciuridae that live in North America. They have distinctive black stripes on their back, always five, sometimes with white stripes in between. Their name derives from their typical chip-like sound. Chipmunks live a solitary life, they mainly gather nuts, but feed of fruits and insects too. What they do not eat directly they stowe away in their cheek pouches and stockpile some of it for the winter. They use their cheek pouches when building their burrows too, they transport the dirt to different places so that no one notices their digging.

Chipmunks became famous as "The Chipmunks" and "Chip an' Dale" through comic strips and movies by Walt Disney. They are considered being very cute by humans, mainly because they stuff a lot of food into their cheek pouches.

Our chipmunk loves to play in the trees and finding a cosy place for rest or a friend to play with - see photo 5. Even without full cheek pouches it is very cute - but best of all, find out for yourself.
