Panda Cub

Product 79 of 106

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) belongs to the family of real bears, but creates an own subfamily due to its look and genetic characteristics. Its natural environment are bamboo forests in the mountain region of the Chinese provinces Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi. The giant panda lives mainly in reservations. China opened particuliar projects to protect its national emblem against extinction.

The WWF who has chosen the giant panda as its heraldic animal, counts only 1.600 living animals only. Hence this animal belongs to the extremely endagered species and is THE symbol for protection of species in general.

Compared to other bears, the giant panda's diet is primarily herbivorous. It consists almost exclusively of bamboo. It needs to eat ca. 20 - 30 kg daily which takes up to 16 hours every day. The giant panda cannot erect itself on the hindpaw. That's why he often eats while sitting und holding the food with its forepaw.

Every two to three years the female panda delivers a panda cub which weighs only ca. 100 g. Very seldom twins are born. But if so, usually only one gets fed, hence the weaker one dies. Breeding giant pandas in captivity is still not really successful.

We do not know exactly the age of this little panda baby we offer. As it already shows the typical black and white colour scheme and openend its eyes, it will be older than 60 days and loves to play already.
