Golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) belong to the primate family and live in the highland mountain regions of central China. They are endemic to this area and are among the most cold-tolerant of all primates.
Characteristic features of these snub-nosed monkeys are their long fur, golden fur around the face, light blue eye area, hairless mouth area and snub nose. The latter, it is believed, atrophied over the course of evolution due to the bitter cold. According to US primatologist Nina Jablonski, "A bare, fleshy nose would be too susceptible to frostbite."
Male golden snub-nosed monkeys also grow a mane-like, golden-yellow coat on their backs as they age, with hairs that can grow up to half a metre long.
Their diet is purely vegetarian and consists mainly of leaves, fruits, buds and seeds, as well as lichens and tree bark during the cold winter months.

Golden snub-nosed monkeys were once widespread. However, with the last ice age 11,000 years ago, the loss of forest regions through deforestation and climate change, their habitats have shrunk dramatically.
Part of their habitat has been placed under protection by China, a part that is also home to the Giant Panda. This naturally benefits the monkeys. Nevertheless, these primates are a highly endangered species and are on the Red List of Threatened Species.

After a gestation period of approximately six months, golden snub-nosed monkeys usually give birth to one young. Initially, the young are black on their back and head and white-grey on their belly. Only after several weeks the typical yellow coat colour appears. The females of the group are responsible for raising the young.

Our plush golden-nosed baby does not necessarily need mountainous regions or long, cold winters to feel at home. Au contraire, it also likes cosy, warm playrooms for playing, romping, jumping or cuddling. And climbing, of course! But a family would be great, even if it were other animals. So, who has room in the playroom or collection family?
