The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) belongs to the falcon family. It is not only the largest member of this family, but also the most widespread bird species in the world. Except for Antarctica, the Caribbean, Iceland, and New Zealand, it inhabits all continents, where it mainly breeds on cliffs and lives primarily in mountainous landscapes of all kinds and on steep coasts. However, in recent decades it has also been found increasingly in cities and industrial areas with their numerous “artificial rocks.”

The peregrine falcon's regular flight speed is particularly remarkable and unique – averaging 100 km/h. However, it surpasses this when hunting prey in a spectacular dive from a great height, during which it can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h. It shoots down on its prey in a straight line from a constant circular flight. This is referred to as a steep dive – in contrast to a flat dive, which is performed from a perch.

Peregrine falcons are not currently considered an endangered species. However, before the 1950s, they were heavily hunted by egg collectors and falconers, for example, and from 1955 onwards, their population collapsed as a result of the use of DDT. Since the mid-1970s, however, the population has been recovering. The reasons for this are certainly the change in people's attitudes toward peregrine falcons and the installation of suitable nesting aids on buildings inside and outside cities.

Our plush peregrine falcon, like its living relatives, is a resident bird. This means that once it has found its home, it will never leave it.
