Bats (Microchiroptera) – or microbats – are one of the most successful mammalian species. They have been existing on every continent except Antarctic in many different types for more than 60 million years. They are the only mammal that is able to fly actively and the only land mammal that "sees" with echolocation. Indeed they do have eyes, but as they mainly hunt during the night, they rely solely on their good ears to hunt their prey and fly around obstacles. During daytime for sleeping they hide in caves, crevices, hollow trunks, or in manmade housings like attic, ruins, etc.

There are about 950 different kinds of bats that differ greatly. Not only in their size - their wingspan can measure between just come cm to 60 cm (1" to 25") – but in the calls they emit for their echolocation too. The smaller the bat the higher its call - and the louder. Some bats produce up to 140 dB – that is as loud as a starting jumbo jet! Thus it is very good that most bats produce calls in a frequency region that men normally can't hear.

Our bat can be a very quiet, but likes to be close to others just as much. Its living con-specifics live in large colonies, often even different species together, counting up to several million animals. In these colonies they hang on the walls or upside down from ceilings or trees cuddled up against each other to stay warm.
Our bat surely is very happy with a human companion to stay warm and play with as well.
