The habitat of the arctic fox (vulpes lagopus), also known as white fox, polar or snow fox, is the northern polar circle. Its the only wild dog which changes the colour of its fur from summer to winter, so that it is perfectly adapted to its surroundings.
During summer the fur is short and brown coloured on head, back, tail and legs. The sides and belly are beige. In winter the fur is very long, with a thick layer of wool, that keeps the arctic fox warm. Even the paws are covered with fur, in that way it can withstand the coldest winters.
The fur in wintertime shows two colorations: The white one of the so called white fox and the blue one (which is a kind of blueish-greyish-black).

Analogous to its southern fellows the arctic fox is a very social animal, that lives in family groups. Fox and vixen stay together for all of their life. They live in complex tunnel systems. They dig hem into the ground that is not reached by the permafrost, which is actually not very spacious. Thus burrows are used for many successive years, up to generations. It is assumed that some have been used for up to 500 years.

Our arctic fox is very frugal and robust, just like its living conspecific. It can't await to reach a new lovely home which can be even in a heated kids or living room.
