Ringed seals owe their name to the ring shaped pattern of their fur when being grown up. The babies get born completely white and are perfectly camouflaged in the ice. Approx. after 4 weeks the fur starts to get more and more grey with the typical pattern.

Ringed seals grow 1,4m (4.9') long and 70 kg (150 lb) heavy, they are rather small in their species. They live in the polar oceans of the North Pole, meaning areas which are covered in ice for several months. To dive into the water to search for food they use holes in the ice that they keep open easily with a claw on their front flippers.

Ringed seals are not endangered yet, but global warming is a possible but critical thread. The fist month of their lifes the baby seals spend on the ice because their fat layer is not thick enough to protect them against the cold temperatures of the arctic water. If there is no ice, or if it melts too early, the survival of this species is at risk.

Our baby ringed seal does not show the typical pattern yet, instead its fur is completely white. Thus it is better protected against wind and camouflaged on the ice. But it surely will not take long until its coat changes. Then it will dive into the water for the first time and swim around merrily.

The ring shaped pattern is easily spotted on our adult plush ringed seal (Kö-F6450) - see second photo.
