Hyenas (Hyaenidae) belong to the mammals and predators. Despite their dog-like appearance they belong to the felidae. Hyenas live widely spread in Africa and West- and South Asia.
In general they do not have a good reputation, especially because of many prejudices that are not always true. They are said to be stupid and living on others. But they are not - to the contrary, they develop strategies. For example when threatened by predators they play dead until those loose interest. Furthermore they are good, basically nocturnal, hunters.

Hyenas do have a bulky stature, with strong jaw and neck muscles that allow them to carry their prey far. This they have to do, since often stronger predators, such as lions, try to take away their prey. Often hyenas are left with the leftovers, which is why they are thought to be scavengers. But by this they fulfill a very important function – cleaning the veld. But they eat plants and fruits too.

Hyenas are very social animals, that live in groups of up to 100 individuals that every hyena protects vigorously. Raised by humans, hyenas can become very affectionate.

Our little hyena is very affectionate too, and as it is very soft, it is a joy to cuddle and play with it. Luckily, one does not have to worry about the normally very sharp hyena-teeth.
