Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are one of the smallest within the mongoose family. They live in small groups in the dry regions of South Africa and eat mainly insects.

After a gestation period of about 77 days, two to four young get born. The eyes and ears are initially still closed and open only after two weeks. The first two months the young are suckled.
Meerkats have a pronounced social behavior. Nevertheless, rivalries may occur between dominant and subdominant females, so the young may be in danger during the first 24 hours. After that, however, other female helpers besides the mother are available to raise the young: Siblings, aunts and grandmothers. This behavior is also found, for example, in the alpine marmots or elephants.

Meerkats reach a height of up to 29 cm, the tail gets up to 24 cm. Their weight is ca. 750 g. They can become up to six years old.

Our meerkat baby is already older than two weeks. It has already opened its eyes and makes its first trips alone. It likes to sit on a sand hill and look at the surroundings. You can also observe this, if you offer this little animal a new home.
