(Bird-Spider) Tarantulas (Theraphosidae) exist for more than 350 mio. years. They belong to the family of spiders (Arachnida), which are domesticated in subtropical and tropical climate. They are crepuscular and nocturnal animals.

Compared to other spiders tarantulas do not spin a net but do ambush the prey. Those get killed with a poisoned bite by their forcipate mouthpart. For man this bite is harmless but painful.

In German speaking areas commonly, the tarantula is often called a tarantula wolf spider by error. This is wrong as the last one is a wolf spider and only gets a body length of 2 - 3 cm, while the bird-spider tarantula gets a size of ca. 10 cm.
Bird-spider tarantulas not only show a hairy body and hairy legs too – in contrast to other spiders. They do have eight eyes and can become 30 years in a terrarium, otherwiese 15 - 20 years old.

Our bird-spider tarantula "Therese" is hairy as well and very cosy, too. Of course it does not bite, but loves to climb the arm of its owner.
