Tree kangaroos (Dendrolagus) belong to the kangaroo family (Macropodidae) and are therefore marsupials. They are native to New Guinea and the Cape York Peninsula in northeastern Australia, where they have adapted to an arboreal, i.e., tree-dwelling, lifestyle.

Tree kangaroos reach a body length of approximately 130 to 180 cm, with a tail that can measure 50 to 90 cm. Their fur is black or brown on top, and some species also have patterns. The underside is often whitish. Tree kangaroos have shorter, stockier legs with wider paws than conventional kangaroos. Their long, curved claws are another adaptation to their arboreal lifestyle, making them excellent climbers and jumpers from tree to tree.

Like many marsupials, tree kangaroos tend to be solitary animals. They only seek company during the mating season. After a gestation period of about 30 to 40 days, one joey is usually born, which then lives in the pouch for another year.

Our tree kangaroo is a Matschie's tree kangaroo, which is endemic to the rainforests of New Guinea. However, there are 13 other species, all of which are now classified as highly endangered on the “Red List.” This is primarily due to the ever-shrinking habitats that we humans leave them.
Matschie's tree kangaroos live at altitudes of 1,000 to 3,300 meters and are largely nocturnal or crepuscular.

Even though this Matschie's tree kangaroo is endemic, our plush version likes to migrate from New Guinea to settle in a child's room, playroom, or living room. It will also get used to a family and other animals, as long as it is just there and can feel safe and secure. Of course, it must have a place to climb and hide. But isn't that what every child likes to do too?
