The beaver (castor fiber) is the second largest rodent in the world. It can grow as long as 1.4 m (~ 4.6') and as heavy as 35 kg (70 lbs). It lives in rivers and likes to shape the surroundings according to its wishes. If the water level is too low, the beaver builds the dams it is famous for. To do that it chops down trees as strong as 1 m (~ 3') and uses them together with brushwood and clay.

Beavers are perfectly endowed for aquatic life. Their fur is a hundred times as dense as human hair, isolating perfectly against cold and wet. For these reasons the fur was very popular, and beavers were hunted almost to extinction everywhere. Due to intensive efforts of the last decades the population started to grow again.

Beavers are very familiar, a couple stays together lifelong. They raise their offspring together and even the offspring of the preceding year help. To communicate with each other beavers use their scaled and flat tail and smack it on the water surface. Also for steering and to regulate the body temperature the tail is used.

Beavers to not hibernate, but collect food supply in fall and store it. The den is isolated so well, even with low freezing temperatures outside, inside it never drops below freezing point.

Our beaver too is active all year round and is already eager for a new home. The second photo shows beaver "Bibi" with the adult "Elli" (Kö-F4870). Maybe "Elli" gives some advise for swimming, building a dam, or maybe just for a new game.
