The hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) is a rodent, that belongs to the family of dormice. They live mainly on leafy trees and in bushes, evading predators as much as possible.
The hazel dormouse is an excellent climber, keeping the balance with its long and bushy tail. It loves hazel nuts, hence the name. To reach the nut inside it nibbles a small, round hole into the shell. This behaviour is very characteristic and even allows to conclude where it lives by simply collecting empty nut shells. During summer the hazel dormouse eats other food like seeds, fruits and insects as well.

The hazel dormouse is very shy and nocturnal, thus it is hard to discover in the wild.
Luckily there is our hazel dormouse, that is not timid at all and likes to be admired. It also is bigger than its living relatives, that only measures 15 cm (~6''). Thus it is easy to spot even if it wants to hide.
